SF Boylesque Company Bio
Originally conceived as an all-male burlesque revue, SF Boylesque
has been breaking new ground in San Francisco since its inception.
Burlesque is generally thought of as a female domain but SF Boylesque
is poised to change that. The appeal of the project was immediately
evident as the line for the first performance formed more than 90
minutes before “curtain”. Right away the founders knew
they were onto something big.
The first weekend sold out immediately. Extra shows were added,
but demand continued to increase. The show quickly transferred to
a residency at Mama Calizos's Voice Factory; once again, playing
to sold out audiences. Media response was overwhelming. The show
closed after four triumphant weeks, on July 1st, 2007.
The respite was only temporary. After numerous requests for repeat
performances, in August of 2007, its founders decided to continue
building on the original project. Casting began and SF Boylesque
was re-introduced; this time, as a traveling troupe.
The world of Burlesque requires a sensitivity to the subtle and
the absurd. Being true to those roots, SF Boylesque understands
that there is no need to take themselves too seriously. Mixing fast-paced
commentary and physical theater with strong art direction, they
conjure-up a reality in which the unexpected is carefully crafted;
every moment is a dance, every interaction, an invitation to participate.
San Francisco is populated with urban nomads. This reality affects
SF Boylesque productions, as specialty acts tend to travel freely
around the globe. It is through personal connections SF Boylesque
has with the circus, vaudeville and burlesque communities that local
audiences are offered thish rare opportunity to dazzle at the talents
of these highly-mobile, underground stars. Currently, SF Boylesque
evening's entertainment features a devilishly handsome accordion
player, a dreamy contortionist with golden locks and a strong man
act. These rare treats pair nicely with the solo, duets and group
dances the company cultivates. Other regular offerings include a
sexy pole act, knife jugglers, and light opera from our resident
Diva, Kristen Jones (SF Boylesque only permanent female fixture).
